LifeLine Training - What Does it Involve?

After an initial introductorymeeting you will be invited to apply to partake in LifeLine training and you will be requested to supply two personal referees. You will then be interviewed to see whether LifeLine is for you and you are for LifeLine.

Those people who select to proceed will then receive at least 50 hours of professional training. The training you will receive is recognised within the sector as being of the highest standard. The training will cover areas as diverse as basic theory, specific skill training, self awareness exercises, telephone counselling skills, awareness of referral agencies, counselling practice, specific situation training (e.g. suicide calls, grief) and more.

You will then share in a number of tandem duties with experienced telephone counsellors as you find your feet. You also receive ongoing training, supervision and support.

There may be a small charge for the training. In addition, we ask for a two year commitment to the service including night duties.

For more information, or to seek answers to any questions on becoming a LifeLine Telephone Counsellor contact the centre nearest to you.

Volunteers

Helping As a LifeLine Counsellor

LifeLine counsellors are volunteers - you are not paid to do your job. EveryLifeLine Telephone Counsellor is there because they want to be.
LifeLine Centres are always looking for warm, caring, non-judgemental people. All LifeLine counsellors are required to receive a minimum of 50 hours training in:

  • Telephone counselling skills.
  • Self awareness.
  • Special topics such as grief, suicide, life transitions or psychiatric disability.

All LifeLine Training is offered by experienced and professional counsellors. During the initial training you will also undertake a series of assessments, and spend time with established counsellors. You will be trained to standards accredited by LifeLine New Zealand. If you feel that you have the time and commitment to make an active contribution to LifeLine, then we would love to hear from you. For more information about joining LifeLine, contact the Centre nearest to you.

Additional support and training is given to telephone counsellors through the provision of ongoing training, on-line supervision, written feedback, 24 hour back-up support and group supervision. The ongoing training programme offered by LifeLine enables volunteers to be involved in additional areas of the service such as training, recruitment and assessment.
